| Project Title: | Effect of zinc on nitrogen metabolism and nutritive metabolism and nutritive value of clusterbean (Cymopsis tetragonoloba L. Taub) |
| Project Description: | The present investigation was undertaken with a view to (i) study the effect of varying level of zinc on morphophysiological parameters at different growth stages, (ii) study the effect of zinc on activity of enzymes of N-metabolism, and (iii) study the effect of zinc on the nutritive value of clusterbean. Clusterbean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub. cv. HG-563) plants were raised in earthenware pots with sandy loam soil deficient in zinc (0.36 ppm). Two experiments were conducted based on mode of zinc application viz. (i) Effect of soil application of zinc on clusterbean. (ii) Effect of foliar spray of zinc on clusterbean. The observations recorded are summarized below: Visual observations revealed deficiency symptoms of zinc in clusterbean plants with no zinc application (control). In control plants, the terminal leaves were smaller than normal and discoloration between veins within 15 days of sowing was observed. In addition, stunted plant growth with less plant height and leaf number was observed in control plants. Application of zinc through soil and foliar spray of 0.5 per cent ZnSO₄ corrected the deficiency symptoms and plants showed healthy growth, greenness of leaves, increase in height of plants and number of pods. |

| Study Title: | Effect of soil application of zinc on the morphological traits of clusterbean |
| Description: | This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of soil application of zinc on the morphological traits of clusterbean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.) grown under zinc-deficient sandy loam soil. Clusterbean variety HG 563 was cultivated in earthen pots under naturally lit net-house conditions using four levels of zinc supplied as zinc sulphate (ZnSO₄): 0.0 (control), 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil. Plants were sampled at vegetative (30 DAS), flowering (50 DAS), grain filling (70 DAS), and maturity (90 DAS) stages to assess the influence of zinc on growth and biomass accumulation. Morphological traits including shoot length, root length, number of leaves, number of nodules, fresh and dry weights of leaves, shoots, roots, and nodules, along with visual zinc deficiency symptoms, were recorded. The study demonstrated that increasing soil zinc concentration significantly improved vegetative growth, biomass production, nodulation, and overall plant vigor, with the 10.0 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil treatment producing the greatest improvement in most morphological traits compared with the untreated control. |

The zinc treatments were incorporated into 5 kg of zinc-deficient sandy loam soil in earthen pots before sowing. Clusterbean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) A zinc-free nutrient solution was applied before sowing and at weekly intervals thereafter to ensure that zinc was the only variable nutrient. The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of increasing soil zinc levels on plant growth, morphology, biomass accumulation, and nodulation throughout different growth stages. |
