Computational biology, brought together

Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Computational Biology Conference (CBC 3.0), scheduled for 09–11 December, 2026. CBC 3.0 is organized by the Indian Biological Data Centre (IBDC) at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) , Faridabad — the first national data centre mandated to archive life-science data generated by public funding in India.

The conference brings together researchers, students, funding agencies, vendors, and policy makers working in computational biology and life science to share new research and discuss the field's direction. Join us to learn about recent developments and build collaborations.

Professor Anurag Agrawal is Dean, BioSciences and Health Research, Trivedi School of Biosciences, Ashoka University, India, and former director of the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, a national laboratory of CSIR, India. After completing graduate medical education at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, he further trained in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA, followed by a PhD in Physiology from Delhi University. His primary research is in respiratory biology and broader interests are in a new vision of health and healthcare seen through the lenses of emerging technologies. He has served on numerous national and global advisory groups, chairing the World Health Organization technical advisory group for SARS CoV2 viral evolution, the Lancet-Financial Times commission for governing digital health futures, and the Responsible AI subgroup at the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence, amongst others. He has been awarded the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize, the Sun Pharma Foundation award, the JC Bose fellowship, and has been elected as fellow of national and international science academies. He serves as Vice President of the Indian National Science Academy, overseeing the policy vertical.

Prof. Neel Sarovar Bhavesh is head of the Transcription Regulation Group at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi. He is also an Adjunct Professor at IISER Bhopal and JNU, New Delhi. He obtained his PhD in Physical Chemistry from TIFR Mumbai in 2003, working in the group of Padma Shri Prof. Ramakrishna V. Hosur, and later did a postdoc at ETH Zurich in the group of Prof. Kurt Wüthrich, a Nobel Laureate. His group uses an integrated structural biology approach to delineate the molecular mechanism of protein-nucleic acid recognition, with special emphasis on understanding the specificity of the recognition during transcription and modulation of host transcription during pathogenesis. His group also works on NMR-based metabolomics, proteomics, and metagenomics to understand metabolic dysregulation in patients with trauma and viral diseases, to discover biomarkers for precision interventions, and on Ayurveda systems. He has published more than 100 research publications and supervised 15 PhD students. He is a member of various committees of DST, ANRF, DBT, BIRAC, ICMR, DHR, AYUSH, UGC, and AICTE, and is also a member of various Biosafety Committees, Ethics Committees for research on human samples, and various selection committees. He was part of the four-member committee of AICTE that drafted the first model curriculum of the four-year engineering course in Biotechnology.

Dr. Amit Dutt is a Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of Delhi South Campus. His group uses genome-wide methods and computational tools to study cancer genome datasets, combining them with laboratory experiments to identify genetic changes linked to cancer and pathogens associated with cancer. Previously, he was a Principal Investigator at ACTREC, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai. He received his Ph.D. in Developmental Biology from the University of Zurich and completed postdoctoral work at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Awards include the Swiss National Science Foundation Fellowship, Ramalingaswami Fellowship, Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance Fellowship, DBT Tata Innovation Fellowship, and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Medicine.

Dr. Dhiraj Dhotre is a Scientist at the National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), Pune, with extensive experience in microbial genomics, metagenomics, and bioinformatics. His research focuses on the human microbiome, particularly the characterization of the Indian microbial signature and its implications for health and disease. His work spans the Indian Human Microbiome Initiative, gut-brain axis interactions, celiac disease, oxalate-metabolizing bacteria, and the development of precision probiotics tailored to Indian gut enterotypes. He is also involved in the Biofoundry project, working at the interface of academia and industry to scale bioprocesses for industrially relevant molecules. His research employs advanced computational approaches to analyze complex multi-meta-omic datasets and understand the role of the human microbiome in public health.

Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe) Coordinator, EMBL-EBI

Dr Jennifer Fleming is the PDBe Coordinator at EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), where she helps lead major structural biology resources, including the Protein Data Bank in Europe, PDBe-Knowledge Base and the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database. She completed her PhD in structural biology at the University of Dundee and undertook postdoctoral research at Dundee and the Universities of Liverpool and Konstanz. A structural biologist by training, her experience spans X-ray crystallography, protein structure analysis, computational method development, research and teaching. Her current work focuses on making experimental and predicted structural data accessible and useful to researchers worldwide. She collaborates internationally on data infrastructure, standards, training and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in the life sciences.

B. Gopal is a Professor at the Division of Biological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. An alumnus of the Maharashtra Education Society, Pune, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, he is a structural biologist by training. His current research interests include gene expression analysis and synthetic microbiology. In addition to his academic affiliation, he has been associated either as a co-founder, advisor or consultant to start-up and mid-size biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries involved in the production of biosimilars and active pharmaceutical ingredients. He is a fellow of all three science academies in India and a recipient of the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar prize awarded by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India.

Matthew is Team Leader for the BioImage Archive and EMPIAR, EMBL-EBI’s image databases. Prior to joining EBI, he led the Informatics team at the John Innes Centre, a research institute focussing on plant and microbial sciences. Matthew’s background is in image analysis, numerical and statistical modelling and scientific data infrastructure.

Dr. Pankaj Jaiswal is a Professor of Systems Biology and Comparative Genomics at Oregon State University. He leads the Planteome project, developing data standards and ontologies for plant genome-to-phenome annotation. He also co-leads the Gramene knowledgebase and directs the Plant Reactome, a plant gene and pathway network. His research focuses on systems biology and studying plant gene networks tied to drought and salinity stress responses in crops. Within NASA GeneLab’s Plant Analysis Working Group, his lab studies microgravity and radiation impacts on transcriptome modulation and alternative splicing in plants. Spanning plant stress biology, genome annotation, comparative genomics, and bioinformatics, his interdisciplinary program strongly emphasizes student and researcher training. Dr. Jaiswal has published 90 peer-reviewed articles, delivered over 125 invited talks, and serves as a Program Director at the U.S. National Science Foundation.

Dr. Bratati Kahali is a Principal Scientist at the Centre for Brain Research, Indian Institute of Science. A computational biologist specializing in human genetics and genomics, her research examines the role of genetic variants in inherited traits and susceptibility to complex diseases, including type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, cognition, and neurodegeneration. Her laboratory employs state-of-the-art genetics and bioinformatics approaches, with a particular focus on whole genome and whole exome sequencing in the Indian population. She is primarily involved in the GenomeIndia project, including whole genome sequencing data generation, processing, and analysis. She completed her PhD at the Bose Institute and Jadavpur University in 2011 and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan Medical School from 2012 to 2016.

She is a cellular neurobiologist who studies cargo biogenesis and movement within neurons using the C. elegans model. Her lab’s major contributions are in elucidating the genetic pathways for biogenesis of synaptic vesicles, and the discovery of the existence and potential consequences of physical crowding in axons. She works closely with physicists, chemists and engineers. Her work provides insights into fundamental sub-cellular processes in neurons and their roles in the behaviour of the organism. Prof. Sandhya Koushika received the HHMI early career scientist fellowship in 2012, the Young Scientist Award from the Young Investigator Meeting, Boston, USA in 2014, the Parmar Oration Award for contributions in fundamental research from the Indian Academy of Neuroscience in 2024, and the S. M. Sircar Memorial Award for interdisciplinary research from the Indian Photobiology Society in 2025. She is an elected board member of the ALBA network, a division of the FENS, and serves on several editorial boards, including Genetics, Journal of Neuroscience, Biology Open (Company of Biologists), and the FASEB Journal.

Professor Yasukazu Nakamura is a faculty member in the Division of Informatics at National Institute of Genetics (NIG), part of The Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS) in Japan, where he leads the Genome Informatics Laboratory. His research focuses on analyzing and annotating various genomes, constructing genome databases, and developing tools and workflows to enhance the quality of genomic data. He has played a crucial role in analyzing microbial, plant, and animal genomes, advancing understanding of genetics at the molecular level. He is also instrumental in managing the DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ), a partner of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC), one of the world’s largest public repositories of genetic information. As Head of International Collaboration, he promotes the open sharing of nucleotide sequence data, ensuring DDBJ remains an invaluable resource for the global scientific community. He is involved in international collaborations and partnerships, improving genome annotation accuracy, enhancing genome databases value, and establishing standards for genome analysis and database development.

Prof. Debnath Pal serves in the Department of Computational and Data Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. His research program operates at the interface of biology, data science, and computation, with a broad focus on multi-scale biology and health, spanning fundamental molecular biology to translational biomedical research. His fundamental research focuses on developing computational frameworks and quantitative methods that integrate data generated from advanced experimental technologies, including next-generation sequencing, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and medical imaging. His research encompasses diverse areas such as protein-function inference from molecular dynamics simulations, secondary and tertiary genome analysis, structure-function relationships of small non-coding RNAs, mechanisms of prokaryotic intrinsic transcription termination, and multi-species inter-organ transport. His work has contributed to computational approaches for understanding biomolecular structure, dynamics, molecular interactions, and genome-wide functional organization. A major thrust of his translational research is the development of Medical-Imaging and Information Datasets (MIDAS), a technology-enabled, hub-and-spoke platform designed to establish a robust, scalable, standardized, and interoperable medical data infrastructure for India. Through MIDAS, Prof. Pal and his collaborators are developing curated, high-quality medical imaging datasets together with computational tools and end-to-end AI solutions for imaging-based diagnosis, prognosis, screening, and clinical decision support. His work on AI-enabled oral precancer screening has further contributed to establishing TANUH, an AI Center of Excellence at IISc, providing an institutional platform to advance AI-driven healthcare research and translation in India. Prof. Pal serves as a reviewer for numerous national and international journals, and his scientific contributions have been recognized through several distinctions, including the INSA Young Scientist Medal and the NASI–SCOPUS Young Scientist Award.

Dr. Sabarinathan Radhakrishnan is an Associate Professor at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bengaluru, where he leads a research programme focused on understanding cancer evolution through computational and functional genomics. His research investigates how genome organization, chromatin architecture, and cellular states influence the accumulation of somatic mutations and cancer development. His work integrates large-scale cancer genomics, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, and artificial intelligence to uncover the mechanisms underlying tumour evolution and therapeutic response. He is a recipient of the DBT/Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship.

Raghava is a Professor in the Department of Computational Biology at IIIT-Delhi. He is a strong advocate of open-source software and open-access science, and all resources developed by his group are made freely available to the scientific community. His group has developed and maintained more than 300 bioinformatics software tools, databases, and web servers, making it one of the most prolific contributors of bioinformatics resources worldwide. He has published over 350 research papers, which have received more than 38,000 citations, and has an h-index of 100. In 2014, he was recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Thomson Reuters, ranking among the top 1% of researchers worldwide in computer science. He is a recipient of several prestigious national honors, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the National Bioscience Award, and the J. C. Bose National Fellowship. He is a Fellow of major Indian science academies (FNA, FASc, FNASc).

Dr. Krithika Rangarajan is an Associate Professor of Oncoradiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. She holds an MD from AIIMS and a PhD from IIT Delhi, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR). Her research focuses on the applications of artificial intelligence and large language models in enhancing and simplifying radiological reporting for clinical care.

Dr. Sarangthem Indira Devi is a Scientist–F (Microbial Biotechnology) at BRIC–Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (BRIC-IBSD), Imphal, with 23 years of research experience and collaborations with 18 national institutions and Central Universities. She earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology from C.C.S. University, Meerut, and received a Gold Medal in M.Sc. Microbiology. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Washington State University, USA. Her recognitions include the DBT Rapid Grant Young Investigator Award, Newton-Bhabha Fund Award, UGC Visiting Scientist Fellowship, and NASI Membership (2024). Her research contributions focus on exploring Northeast India’s untapped microbial and mushroom diversity and integration of multi-omics approaches to identify therapeutic, nutraceutical, and antimicrobial compounds supporting drug development. Dr. Devi has published over 65 research articles, 3 book chapters, co-edited two books, and holds two patents. She has completed major DBT and ICMR projects, guided 8 Ph.D. scholars and 3 postdoctoral fellows, and serves as In-charge of the Microbial Repository Centre, promoting sustainable bioresources management for healthcare, agriculture, and economic development.

Dr. Durba Sengupta is currently a scientist at the CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, Pune and affiliated as a Professor at AcSIR, Ghaziabad. Over her career, which includes doctoral training in Heidelberg, post-doctoral research at the University of Groningen, and a Ramalingaswami Fellowship, she has authored numerous impactful publications bridging physical chemistry, structural biology, and computational biology. In her research group, they have been able to identify the molecular mechanisms underlying several processes such as membrane protein dynamics, and protein-lipid interactions. An important focus area of her work are GPCRs, and they have identified specific lipid binding hotspots, particularly for cholesterol, phosphoinositides, and gangliosides, and have demonstrated how lipid interactions directly modulates receptor dimerization, conformational flexibility, and activation dynamics. She has been invited to multiple international conferences in biophysics and computational biology and is an editor of J. Membr. Biol. (Springer Nature Press) and FEBS Lett. and has guest edited special issues for several journals.

Shantanu Sengupta, Chief Scientist, at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Delhi, works in the broad area of Clinical Proteomics and Metabolomics. He completed his Masters in Organic Chemistry from Jadavpur University and PhD from CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (degree awarded by Jadavpur University). He then did his postdoctoral work from the National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio, USA. He is currently the President of Proteomics Society, India and a council member of AOHUPO, and the International Society of Heart Research (Indian Section). He is the coordinator of Phenome India, a flagship project of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. He has published several papers in reputed International journals and is an Academic Editor of the Journal of Proteins and Proteomics. He has received the DBT Biosciences Award in 2011 and is a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (NASI) and the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology.

Prof. N. Senthil Kumar is a Professor in the Department of Biotechnology, Mizoram University, Aizawl, Mizoram. He earned his B.Sc. from the University of Madras in 1992, M.Sc. from Bharathiar University in 1994, and Ph.D. from Bharathiar University in 1998. He served as a Lecturer at Colleges in Tamilnadu and as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at Sun Yat-sen University, China, before joining Mizoram University in 2007, a position he continues to hold. His research focuses on human disease genomics, molecular markers, bioinformatics, next-generation sequencing, genetic variations, and mutation analysis. He has contributed extensively to studies on population genetics, cancer, COVID-19, diabetes, and autism in Mizoram. Prof. Kumar has authored or co-authored over 200 publications. He serves as Principal Investigator of the DBT-NER Advanced Level State Biotech Hub at Mizoram University, supporting capacity building, research on disease mitigation, and personalized healthcare. He is also involved in BioNEST incubator activities and has guided numerous research scholars. His work advances biotechnology education, genomic research, and health studies tailored to Northeast India’s unique ethnic and health context.

Trained in computational biology (specifically computational protein folding using statistical-mechanics based techniques with Dr. Ken Dill), Dr. Thomas turned to genomics as soon as the Human Genome Project began pilot work in 1995. The culmination of this early work was the publication of the paper describing the sequencing of the first human genome in 2001; Dr. Thomas led the work described in the 10-page section of the paper entitled "An overview of the predicted protein coding genes in the human genome." Since that time, Dr. Thomas’s group has continued to innovate in the area of computational analysis of genomic data, with an emphasis on gene function and evolution. Recent advances in the work on defining human gene functions and their evolution were published in Nature. In addition to founding and continuing development on the PANTHER phylogenomics project, Dr. Thomas is a director of the Gene Ontology Consortium (since 2010) and the UniProt Consortium (since 2025), two of the largest and best-known bioinformatics projects in the world.
