- Abstract: The rumen of ruminant animals’ functions as a natural fermenter, housing a vast and diverse microbial community that plays a central role in the degradation of complex plant polymers through an extensive repertoire of enzymes. The utilization of unconventional fibrous feed resources is becoming increasingly important for developing sustainable ruminant feeding systems. This study evaluated the impact of a lignin-rich diet containing coconut coir on the active rumen microbiome of goats (Capra hircus) using metatranscriptomic profiling. Sixteen goats (n = 4 per group) were fed diets containing graded levels of coconut coir inclusion (0%, 7%, 14%, and 21%) along with a compound concentrate mixture for 45 days, following a 15-day acclimatization period to the respective diets. After the feeding trial, rumen liquid samples were collected and subjected to RNA sequencing for microbial and functional profiling
