  • Abstract: This study investigates the spatial and seasonal variation in marine bacterial communities in coastal and offshore waters of Visakhapatnam along the Bay of Bengal using full-length 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing on the Oxford Nanopore platform. Eight seawater samples were collected from coastal and offshore stations during the pre- and post-monsoon seasons from both surface and bottom waters. Concurrent hydrographic measurements, including temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll fluorescence, and other environmental parameters, were obtained using CTD profiling to characterize the sampling environment. The generated full-length 16S rRNA gene sequences were used to characterize bacterial community composition, diversity, and taxonomic distribution across spatial and seasonal gradients. The dataset captures the microbial diversity of coastal and offshore marine environments and enables comparative analyses of bacterial communities in relation to environmental variability. Taxonomic profiles indicated the presence of diverse bacterial groups, including members of Pseudomonadota, Bacteroidota, and Actinomycetota, together with a substantial proportion of unclassified taxa, highlighting the largely unexplored microbial diversity of the region. This publicly available dataset provides a valuable resource for studies of marine microbial ecology, biodiversity, environmental monitoring, comparative metagenomics, and future investigations into the ecological and functional roles of marine microorganisms in the Bay of Bengal.
