  • Abstract: The rumen of small ruminants contains a highly diverse anaerobic microbial community that plays an important role in fermenting plant based diets into essential metabolic end products required for the host nutrition and energy supply. Rumen digesta from small ruminants such as goats and sheep was collected and processed under strict anaerobic culture conditions. Methods adapted from standard rumen microbiology techniques including Hungate anaerobic culturing were used to enrich obligate anaerobes and other key functional microbial groups within the rumen ecosystem
