Study TitleEffect of soil application of zinc on the morphological traits of clusterbean
DescriptionThis study was conducted to evaluate the effect of soil application of zinc on the morphological traits of clusterbean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.) grown under zinc-deficient sandy loam soil. Clusterbean variety HG 563 was cultivated in earthen pots under naturally lit net-house conditions using four levels of zinc supplied as zinc sulphate (ZnSO₄): 0.0 (control), 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil. Plants were sampled at vegetative (30 DAS), flowering (50 DAS), grain filling (70 DAS), and maturity (90 DAS) stages to assess the influence of zinc on growth and biomass accumulation. Morphological traits including shoot length, root length, number of leaves, number of nodules, fresh and dry weights of leaves, shoots, roots, and nodules, along with visual zinc deficiency symptoms, were recorded. The study demonstrated that increasing soil zinc concentration significantly improved vegetative growth, biomass production, nodulation, and overall plant vigor, with the 10.0 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil treatment producing the greatest improvement in most morphological traits compared with the untreated control.

#TypeNameValueDescription
1 abiotic Zinc as ZnSO4 0.0 (control) Zinc was applied to the soil as zinc sulphate (ZnSO₄) at four treatment levels: 0.0 (control), 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil (ppm). The zinc treatments were incorporated into 5 kg of zinc-deficient sandy loam soil in earthen pots before sowing. Clusterbean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.) variety HG 563 was grown under naturally lit net-house conditions. A zinc-free nutrient solution was applied before sowing and at weekly intervals thereafter to ensure that zinc was the only variable nutrient. The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of increasing soil zinc levels on plant growth, morphology, biomass accumulation, and nodulation throughout different growth stages.
2 abiotic Zinc 2.5 ppm 2.5 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil (ppm) Zinc was applied to the soil as zinc sulphate (ZnSO₄) at four treatment levels: 0.0 (control), 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil (ppm). The zinc treatments were incorporated into 5 kg of zinc-deficient sandy loam soil in earthen pots before sowing. Clusterbean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) A zinc-free nutrient solution was applied before sowing and at weekly intervals thereafter to ensure that zinc was the only variable nutrient. The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of increasing soil zinc levels on plant growth, morphology, biomass accumulation, and nodulation throughout different growth stages.
3 abiotic Zinc 5 ppm 5 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil (ppm) Zinc was applied to the soil as zinc sulphate (ZnSO₄) at four treatment levels: 0.0 (control), 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil (ppm). The zinc treatments were incorporated into 5 kg of zinc-deficient sandy loam soil in earthen pots before sowing. Clusterbean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of increasing soil zinc levels on plant growth, morphology, biomass accumulation, and nodulation throughout different growth stages.
4 abiotic Zinc 10 ppm 10 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil (ppm) Zinc was applied to the soil as zinc sulphate (ZnSO₄) at four treatment levels: 0.0 (control), 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mg Zn kg⁻¹ soil (ppm).
